Summer is a busy season for hands-on learning! Twelve Digital Scholarsare midway through their summer internships with campus partners, working on projects ranging from scientific equipment troubleshooting for the IAS Lab to digital marketing for Academic Affairs. Our Summer Research Fellowsjust finished nine weeks of workshops and are wrapping up their research projects with faculty mentors. Some students are currently studyingabroad, others are preparing for Early Fall programs departing in mid-August, and a few are already back from their summer adventures. Resistance and Resilience in Ireland: Arts, Advocacy and Health Promotion
Explore how Ireland’s rich history, culture and the arts have shaped its contemporary policies and advocacy in public health, healthcare, human rights, and social justice. The program includes field experiences in Dublin, Belfast, Kilkenny and Waterford.
Summer Term A: June 19-July 3 (Ireland), July 8-17 (U.S.), 12 credits
Spain: The Science and Art of Solar Eclipses
The four-week program includes viewing the eclipse from an ideal location, visits to local sites such as observatories, an excursion to Madrid, guest lectures from scholars at the University of León and several other institutions, possibilities for community engagement, homestays with Spanish families, and the opportunity to begin or continue learning Spanish.
Summer Term B, Leon, Spain, 12 credits
STEM Spain: What We Taste and See: the Biochemistry and Material Science of the Spanish Experience
This program will fully engage students in life in Spain, but also delve into how the brain and body process aesthetic experiences from a biochemical and materials science perspective. Participants will gain greater appreciation for life as you live it in Spain, as well as upon your return home.
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program funds research, study, and teaching opportunities in over 140 countries. It promotes cultural exchange and academic collaboration, helping participants develop leadership skills and a global perspective.

The Marine Renewable Energy Laboratory (MREL) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Washington seeks an undergraduate research assistant for a project involving testing methods for detecting collisions between laboratory-scale marine turbines and marine mammal models in turbulent flows.
Desired Education: Students in Mechanical Engineering in their junior or senior year.
The Armbrust Lab at the University of Washington is seeking an undergraduate to join a research project on translational gene regulation in marine phytoplankton - microscopic algae vital to ocean ecosystems, oxygen production, and global carbon cycling. Using ribosome profiling (Ribo-seq) and metatranscriptomic data, the project explores how phytoplankton regulate protein synthesis in response to environmental changes and daily cycles.
Business and Data-Driven Research on VC Trends in Frontier Tech
This project explores venture capital trends in frontier technologies like AI, blockchain, and energy. Using public and proprietary funding data, students will analyze emerging investment themes and founder–investor dynamics. Work includes statistical analysis and dashboard/report development to support VC decision-making. Ideal for students interested in research, tech strategy, or entrepreneurial finance.
Niveah Martinez, a first-generation UW Bothell student, earned the 2025 Chancellor’s Medal, awarded to those who inspire through exceptional resilience and leadership. Overcoming early-life adversity, she excelled in Computer Science & Software Engineering and applied her cybersecurity and AI research from a study abroad in Spain to strengthen data protection and training for the Latino Leadership Initiative. 2025 President’s Medalist Blazes Her Own Path
Emerald Chuesh, a first-generation Health Studies graduate, was awarded the 2025 President's Medal, the highest academic honor at UW Bothell which recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and impact. Initially on a pre-med track, Chuesh discovered her passion for public health and research, shifting her focus toward evidence-based approaches to mental health advocacy. She aspires to develop meaningful health interventions and possibly pursue neuroscience. Read Emerald's full story.
